AJ/Vanessa
Monday, Aug 3th 10:00pm EST
AJ needs a service dog ("Sparky") to help manage her anxiety and panic attacks. But AJ can't stop her OCD mind from bombarding her with horrific images of animal abuse. Another coping mechanism AJ uses is compulsively tweezing out her eyebrows. In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, AJ will go to an animal shelter to confront her obsessive thoughts about animal cruelty. Meanwhile, Vanessa has a compulsion to pick her skin. At one time, she actually picked clear through to her jawbone. But Vanessa recently connected with a woman online, and now she's preparing to meet her new girlfriend for the first time. Knowing she needs to manage her picking for the relationship to work, Vanessa is highly motivated to begin CBT.

Any fellow "checkers" out there? My OCD revolves around checking to make sure that anything that could cause a fire in my house is checked before I leave or that nothing is left around that could cause harm to my cats (ie, poison from cleaners, count cats to make sure they're not in the clothes dryer before I turn it on, etc). I have had OCD since I was 5, diagnosed when I was 30. My "theme" is: What if I miss something that will cause peril...all my fault. I call OCD the "What ifism"...

Share your thoughts about Obsessed
Intense and highly personal, A&E’s true-life docuseries “Obsessed” examines the lives of everyday people imprisoned by unmanageable, repetitive behaviors and sometimes debilitating fear. Whether it is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, General Anxiety Disorder, Hoarding or a variety of phobias, the unscripted series gives viewers a chance to see first-hand how an obsession can radically affect a person’s life. The show explores the stories of sufferers as well as the adverse effects their disorders have on their friends and family.
According to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older. Each one-hour episode of “Obsessed” follows two individual cases where the subjects face extreme anxiety disorders, their struggle and the process of rehabilitation. Capturing their radically affected home life, the dramatic one-on-one sessions with the doctor, and the patients' courageous attempts to defeat their debilitating condition, the show tracks the individuals’ stories from start to finish, ending with a final visit several weeks after therapy is complete to see if they have conquered their disorder or if the obsession still lingers.
