To all concern the poem is called "Requiem" by Robert Lewis Stevenson. Below is the correct version. UNDER the wide and starry sky Dig the grave and let me lie: Glad did I live and gladly die, And I laid me down with a will. This be the verse you grave for me: Here he lies where he long'd to be; Home is the sailor, home from sea, And the hunter home from the hill It was used in the movie "They Were Expendable" with John Wanye Few NEW Sailors use or know of it, just us old salts.

I'm reasonably sure it was the R.L. Stevenson verse that was quoted. Seems I remember in context that the last 4 lines were quoted, beginning:"This be the verse you grave for me...." I'll check the book, if I can. Steve

Thank you Steve White and Mother, but I still don't know which one was actually referred to in Faith of My Fathers. Both poems sound as if they could have been THE one. Appreciate your efforts.

Home is the Sailor Home from the Sea Among my favorite poems, written by my favorite poet, A.E. Housman (1859-1936) is the following: Home is the sailor, home from sea: Her far-borne canvas furled The ship pours shining on the quay The plunder of the world. Home is the hunter from the hill: Fast in the boundless snare All flesh lies taken at his will And every fowl of air. 'Tis evening on the moorland free, The starlit wave is still: Home is the sailor from the sea, The hunter from the hill.

In the movie, John McCain's father quoted part of a poem about "sailor home from the sea, home from the hunt" What is the name of the poem and who is it by?
