Such a shame what you are saying about Degaulle. Just remind you who help Americans to fight against the British in 1776, did you know that French helps Americans ? Are you serious when you are sayig that Americans saved French during the First WW ??? and during the vietnam War ??? are you mad or creating your history of war ??? Go back to read you hsitory books dude, it's maybe the best you can do ... Are you forgeting that thanks to french resistant, the war was stopped before (even Ike said on his memory "without the help of french resistant, the war will propably spend more than a year"). Do you what is occupation ? no, there is no American who can understand that so never judge when you don t know what is it ? You said the only contribution was vichy, you re stupid, French army was fighting in north Africa with British ? Have You ever been to France ? France was part of NATO at the start of the creation, but it's only in 1961 that Degaulle decided to move on, and only for the same trouble as Iraky crisis, so go back seriously to your history books. And why are you mixing everything ? jacques Chirac not present during the celebration of Reagan death ? do you really think that all the world is looking after you ? there was no american president in France when Miterrand death, and nobody was surprised in France. Why mixing everything ???? Your comment show perfectly how BUSH propaganda works well, I m sad of it cause I really love Amerca, and American s culture, and it's clear that France have to say thanks to AMericans for D DAY, and sincerly all the French people are perfectly concious of that, but during the DDAY there was French troops fighting on Normandy Beach, and we had a French resistance, and it wasn t the case for others country of Europe (such as belgium, Italy, Austria, Denmark, Switzerland, ....) so don't insult the memory of French resistant, please.... and one last point, don't think that all the French hates Americans, please stop thinking what the Americans media (and specially Fox news) said about the French people, WE LOVE AMERCA, AND WE LOVE AMERICANS ! but that's true we don't like the actual Amercians government, like a large part of Americans I think, I ve got lots of Americans friends, and they perfeclty understand why we are not agree for that moment with Americans government, Europeans knows better then any guy of the world that WAR is the LAST solution, not the first of all, we know better then Americans or any country of the world what is a city totally destroyed (my city rouen, was destroyed for 85%) so don't say that French are only "worms" or collabos, my granparents were part of resistant, and my granfather was killed by NAZI after tortures, and when you are saying thins kind of general and stupid things, you are insulting the memory of my granfather, my other granfather (still alive) was part of DDAY in Provence, he fight against NAZI in Algeria and tunisia, he opened concentration camps with Americans, and he was French fighting side by side with AMericans and British, with Leclerc's division. So go back to school to learn a little bit about history. Sorry if there are lots of gramatical troubles, but as the typicall stereotypes of French people, we never take any bath, we are arrogant, and we don't want to speak English .... but we love America ! God bless the world

DeGaulle's portrayal in "Ike" typified the resentment that the French harbored and still have for Americans. They seem to forget who bailed out their tails in WWI, WWII, and Southeast Asia (Vietnam) and still insist on being God's gift to culture and civilization! Did you happen to notice the Jacques Chirac was conspicuously absent at President's Reagan's funeral? When the Allies were ready to recapture Paris, Eisenhower held back his troops to allow DeGaulle to "liberate" Paris. Arrogant and abrasive, through sheer force of will, he asserted France's position with the Allied powers. When NATO was formed after WWII, DeGaulle shunned membership for France. D-Day was truly an Allied coalition on a scale that may never soon be duplicated. The only contribution the French provided in WWII was in 1940 as they bent over while the Germans conquered France in less than 4 weeks not to mention an end run around the "impregnable" Maginot line. When they found that collaborating with the NAZI's was easier than resisting, Vichy was born. And to add insult to injury, they also turned in their own countrymen, especially Jews, to the Gestapo to avoid reprisals. On November 8, 1942, American troops needed to negotiate with Vichy to even land after being fired upon by the French during the "Operation Torch" landings in French Morocco . So please don't piss in my ear and tell me it's raining. I have vacationed in France and have no fond memories or love lost for DeGaulle or his legacy.

That was my impression as well. I am a student of politics and especially of modern France. De Gaulle is one of my heroes. The portrayal in this movie was dishonest intellectually. Most people gain information through the media. They are going to assume that De Gaulle was some meek, small man with a goofy hat. De Gaulle was great because he so loved his country as we do our own here in the USA. Do not fault him for that.

The irony of this movie is that DeGaulle is at least 6'6" and Ike is about 5'9" so that DeGaulle would have towered over Eisenhower; whereas, the A&E t.v. version is the opposite with Tom Selleck being 6'4", and the actor portraying DeGaulle looks to be about 5'11". Maybe the rest of the movie is just as ironic in some of its distortions? At any rate, everyone seems to have missed the point that DeGaulle is the saviour of France, not the allied troops. His French Resistance forces had been fighting long before D-Day so I think it a bit ridiculous for viewers to criticize his desire to save his own turf even though he was an obstacle to the American led invasion through allied's eyes. I believe that today's generations of Americans do not fully understand the plight of Charles DeGaulle as they have not really read anything about him and his position either. Happily, this weekend will commemorate the 60th anniversary with even the Germans being a part of the ceremonies! Strange world in which we live.
