I see all these complaints about the movie being a cigarette commercial. Might I suggest that any one of you have to make the kind of decisions that Eisenhower had to make and see if you don't develop some bad habits yourself.

I just returned from a trip to the Eisenhower Farm at Gettysburg PA. The tour guides confirmed that Ike chain smoked at least three packs a day. He subsisted on cigarettes and loads of coffee practically his entire military career..even after he retired. Ike's smoking habit and poor diet eventually lead to his heart problems as he got older. He eventually died of heart failure.
Ike loved cooking, and had a big outdoor grill at his farm. His specialty was grilling up Angus steaks. Not exactly a healthy diet but he had simple tastes.

Sure, Ike smoked- and so did a lot of folks back then. They also had bowel movements, urinated and slept a lot. A&E chose not to show that, right? The point is- the show had so much heavy smoking that it looked like a tobacco commercial, and I couldn't watch it straight thru ( I switched back & forth with "the Longest Day").

Ok, ya gotta show Churchill with a gigar, but the rest could have been left out with no one being annoyed. When I see that much smoking, I can help but think "under the table bribes from RJ Reynolds", even tho I know that isn't true....right?

It may interest you to know that at the time he was planning D-Day Ike was in fact chain-smoking 4 packs of Camels a day. It may also interest you to know, in this non-smoking world of today, that back then almost everyone smoked, almost everywhere. And when you consider the load Ike had to bear, it is not surprising he smoked heavily.

Ike DID smoke a lot, but I never realized how much, either. According to Tom Selleck (interview on Hardball), some of the past depictions have downplayed his chain-smoking, but Ike's son told him that he really did smoke that much during the war years.

Considering the intense stress Ike had to be under, I'm surprised that ALL he did was chain smoke. What an incredible task he had, and throughout it all, he maintained his dignity and did his best to keep bickering allies all in line.

Ike and smoking

Tom Selick did a wonderful job portraying Ike. But I can not believe that he chain-smoked as Selick did. It made me nauseous to see the clouds of killer smoke pouring out of every scene. Do you have a tobacco sponser deal going?
