BTW, I received my pre-order of War and Peace from DVD Planet yesterday. The colors are somewhat muted, but there are far fewer scratches. There is some fading on the print, but it looks great (very "epic") in widescreen. The 5.1 Dolby digital sound is very vivid for a 1968-era movie. The movie is on 4 DVDs,and there is a 5th DVD with interviews, background, etc.

It looks like the release of the mammoth Russian version of War and Peace is imminent. A review of the release can be found at DVDFile http://www.dvdfile.com/software/review/dvd-video_6/warandpeace_1968.html

DBK, thanks for the info. I, too thought Sergei Bondarchuk's Pierre was right from Tolstoy - the Russian version was just as one would expect of the best of Russian cinema. Bondarchuk's Waterloo was brilliant.

Cheers,

I can't watch the Hollywood version of War and Peace, but I loved the Russsian film. You can get it subtitled on DVD, but it is not the widescreen version. Try any good online DVD retailer, like www.deepdiscountdvd.com or www.dvdempire.com

This is the Kultur release. It is subtitled, but is a grainy print that by all accounts looks no better than the VHS version.

Supposedly, the restored, uncut, widescreen, Dolby digital 5.1 version was going to be released on DVD in January, but its status has been changed to "To Be Announced". I am holding out for that one.

Also, director Sergei Bondarchuk (who also played Pierre in the film) directed the impressive film "Waterloo". AFAIK, the widescreen version of Waterloo is only available on Region 2 or Region 4 DVDs.

Napoleon / War and Peace

Has anyone seen the Russian version of War and Peace? Like the Henry Fonda version it was wonderfully long - but unlike the Fonda film (which was a studio's vehicle for its high-paid stars of the time) it was outstanding. The acting, costumes, battle scenes, and portrayal of the book were wonderful to behold.

However, I have no information on how to obtain a copy of this Russian film (I believe it was subtitled in English). Do any of you know about this film version of War and Peace?

Thanks,
Anja M.
