He was meticulous about his personal hygiene, spending over an hour each day bathing and he would also spend considerable time on his teeth. He even used a type of floss..with a tortoise shell handle, and spearmint flavoured paste for his teeth, which were very white.

Regarding his personal dress, he was a bit of a miser, sending his well worn trousers to be mended (much to the chagrin of josephine) rather than buy a new pair. And of course his famous grey overcoat was hardly ever taken off..I think he knew the importance of an understated 'citizen general' image which his soldiers related to.

However, when it came to his ladies, he wanted pomp and hated to see them in the same dress twice. He once said to one such lady at court; 'Madame, that dress is pretty, but we have seen it before".

I read he was bearded when he returned from Russia, but that is probably only to be expected.

As well as admiring military heros, I think deep down, Napoleon wanted to be a great writer/dramtist and admired the writers and thinkers of his time such as Rousseau (for a time), the poet Ossian (until he found out he was a fraud) and Voltaire...but he didn't think much of Shakespeare...

Kelly,
While Napoleon made a case for the Egyptian expedition that put forward strategic arguments applicable to the War of the Second Coalition, he also was aware of the parallels that such an undertaking would have with Alexander's.

Yes, saw the movie. It was amusing. Ian Holm makes a pretty good Napoleon. I was only upset that history could not be re-written, with Napoleon restored to power.

in the hearts of many

hello danton-

-i must agree that the emperor lives on for many- i request many pardons if the revelation from the book title was too blunt for the weak of heart-

by the by, that is why that movie, "the emperor's new clothes" has such an endearing charm- it takes some of the sting out of the tragedy that was the end of napoleon's life- have you seen the film and if so what was your impression?

-the heroes you mentioned of alexander and caesar are most admirable and reveal some of the impetus for the decisions and behavior of the napoleon career and campaigns- was the expedition to egypt prompted as much by the interests that lie there for the french and english as well as the similarity to the path that alexander took and napoleon desire to follow in his footsteps? or just coincidence?

thanks, kelly

-did napoleon have a reputation of being a "clothes horse"? does anyone know what his vanities were concerning his appearance? was there ever a time he went unshaven, or perhaps bearded?

Kelly,
Interesting title and quite informative. Who knew he died?

Napoleon admired Alexander and Caesar from antiquity and from (roughly) his own era, Frederick the Great of Prussia. He also admired the Corsican patriot, Pascal Paoli, for a time, until the two spilt and became bitter enemies.

To carry that thought further:
- what kind of car would he drive?
- what kind of business would he run?
- would he wear designer clothing (e.g., Hermes)?

"dear napoleon, i know you're dead, but..."

May 8, 2003 12:02 AM
i am currently enjoying browsing through this children's book by elvira woodruff thanks to a thoughtful gift and find the story line interesting in that a young boy was lost on the current "hero" figures of the day and wanted to ask napoleon questions over the current fodder of baseball players and celebrities-

-as quoted by homer simpson... "celebrities, is there anything they don't think they know about and want to tell us how to think as well"

but back to my point (and i do have one)- could anyone contribute as to the persons that napoleon might have held as heroes and why? how did his heroes effect his life? whom did napoleon revere and respect-
