oh that's aall well and true, most likely, but Josephine was known to have lived a fine life in her home alone afterwards and he died lonely, it was really too bad for him, but not her. And it's really too bad he could never appreciate all that she was, guess he needed a second life to get it right.

I'm new to this site and have been taking the time since joining up to look around and see what's here. It was nice to find this subject, as it reminded me of Napoleon's last words. As he lay dying, he was heard to say, "France, the army, and at the head of the army, Josephine." Elizabeth I's last word was "Robin" - for Robert Dudley, the Earl of Leicester, widely reported to have been the love of her life. His last letter to her before he died was later found among her prized possessions. The thought here is that great leaders devote their lives to achievement at a tremendous cost to their personal lives. It is poignant to note of these two that their last thoughts were not of the glory they had won, but of the loves they had lost in pursuing it. _____________ I have spread my dreams under your feet; Tread softly because you tread on my dreams. But if you look at it in perspective you'll see, I think, that he really didn't have any better sense over what he was doing where love was concerned. He may have thought that he loved Josephine, but let's face it, Emperor or not, acceptable or not, basically he laughed in her face with his maliciousness every time he'd take a mistress or laugh at her advice or at her standing in the community or at her kindness. Whatever was his *fancy* basically. That's how he was to me in that movie.

I agree. The critics hated it, but I remember seeing Desiree as a kid and I loved it!

The best "Napoleon" was played by Marlon Brando in "Desiree" He really studied this part.

That was me that mentioned "Napoleon and Love". Try the following website. It looks as if it might be able to be ordered here or at least give you a little more info. http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/5144/drama.html I think I saw it on some PBS station in 1981. It really piqued my interest on Napoleon.

Someone mentioned the 70's era miniseries staring Ian Holm. I still remember seeing this when I was in college in 1976 or so. I have not seen it since. It was a multipart series, starting with young General Banaparte's fascination with Desiree Clary, and each episode concentrated on a "love" or mistress. I remember Billie Whitelaw as Josephine, Pamela Franklin (I think) as Mlle George, and Holm's great portrayal of Napoleon. Sure wish it would be released on video.
