storming the bastille

Jul 15, 2003 1:25 AM
happy july 14th (as i duck to dodge any left over sentiments of this past spring)-
-the storming of the bastille which began at dawn, july 14th of 1789 was a few weeks in coming and a day long plotting and planning the seige of about 300 persons prepared to give their lives to gain control of this fortress- was it really for the reason of frustration and revolt against unreasonable taxes and repressive government policies or was it the outcome of mob mentality that turned all the anger of the crowd to be vented on these poor guardsmen and on prison governor?-
-carrying the mutilated bodies of the captured guardsmen through the street did get the slight attention of louis XVI and is recorded in history- when a similar occurence took place in somalia in 1993, most the world was repulsed and shocked-
- should the world of 1789 have been repulsed and shocked at the tactics and behaviour of these french? would the revolution (and not just a "revolt" sire) have received as much support had the incident been documented more fully and would france have embraced bastille day with a day of celebration? tradition dictates the pattern now, but what of then... did the people really know had happened?
-different times, different people i am sure-
