and I feel it's 90% slice of life and 10% mystery. Still the story is enjoyable.

How many Omens do you need?? Well, That's a little like saying that someone's soothsaying or could predict the future based on readings. STrange? For me it is. HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE?

lms says: I thought the book was enjoyable, though IMO it was 90% Christmas fluff (but nice fluff) and only about 10% mystery. I didn't figure out who the killer was till the very end, either -- but then I never try too hard ... I just go along for the ride. I did enjoy Lucy's interaction with her children, especially with the daughter when she was trying on stuff to wear to "Lance's" house. Been there, done that with teenage daughter. Thought the spoiled cookie exchange was a tragedy/hoot....gives new meaning to "toilet water"! After all -- how many omens do you need that that event was cursed?!

I didn't suspect the culprit until the final scenes, and haven't thought about whether the author was fair or not in sprinkling the clues around. What did everyone think of the climax to the cookie exchange gathering at Lucy's house? All that work and expense gone to ruin. I would have sat down in the middle of the floor and cried if it had happened at one of ours. My craft club held one every December for many years, and it was the highlight of the holidays when we carried our boxes of cookies home after the exchange. Hubbies and kids were eagerly waiting at the door in many houses. BTW, did anyone think there should have been earlier warning of the impending disaster so that it could have been averted? It seemed to happen quite suddenly. I lived with a bulging/leaking ceiling for 30 years, but it was from a flat balcony on the second story leaking rain and snowmelt, rather than a plumbing emergency. Our bulge was right over the dining-room table and luckily, never caved in, but maybe plumbing would cause much more water to overload the ceiling more quickly and all at once.

I try to avoid guessing when I am reading a new author, since I usually tend to try to be more clever than the author! (How often have we commented on the fact that if Christie were writing the story being discussed, she would have done something different!) Anyway, I should be done in a few days and frankly have so many possible suspects, I don't know what to think.

Initials or no, I don't think it's Lee as she's too obvious. But then it's the clues I need to go by not what I think the author might planting to steer from or to the culprit. Hope that makes sense.

This book is a quick read - I finished it while on my little trip this week, but will try not to get ahead of the chapter segments listed in discussion. Chick, I didn't care much for Steffie, either. Very presumptuous of her to bring her pamphlets to the cookie exchange. I wish Lucy had been more assertive and stopped Steffie from displaying them.

There's something about that LT. Scott I just don't trust - nobody is that goody-two-shoes. -- Life may not be the party we hoped for but while we are here we might as well dance

And the family comes to get the victim's personal thingies. Why do I feel it's Steffie who is behind the murder? Something about her being involved in MADD and Lucy feeling she's zealous about her convictions and participation in the group. I'm probably whistling up the wrong tree...or is that barking? lol -- Edited by Mysterychick at 12/05/2008 10:46 PM PST
