This is VERY true. I used to associate "quality TV" with A&E, but that is no longer the case. I can't tell you that last time I tuned into ANYTHING they aired. I joined today because I watched Horatio Hornblower this past week and forgot how EXCELLENT it was. They REALLY need to continue with the series.

I find it interesting that the poll you encounter when first entering this site does not include the option "I don't watch any of these shows."

I too would like to see some quality TV again. 'Horatio Hornblower' is an exceptional series and while it might be too expensive to keep producing, you could certainly find some other stories to make. History is full of exciting myths, real stories, and legends.

I swear to you A & E, that if you'd step up and offer programming beyond a 7th grade level, people WOULD watch.

The more I pay attention to A&E's lineup, the more I believe that it is not a coincidence that A&E are the only two vowels in shAmE.

I've noticed the decline and fall of A&E with all the others. It is a sad thing to see. I'd had a belly full of Cops, and its various ripoffs (including Dog) long before Dog came along.
At some point in time, someone will wake up feeling all warm and cozy for their programming decisions, then realize it's because their cardboard box in the back alley has caught fire. So much for smoking in bed.

I created a petition about this to bring back "AIRLINE" and for A&E to have quality programing! They need to listen to us and what we say about their shows!

Click on the link in my signature.

Thanks!

Amen, batwind!

If I want reality drivel, I can tune in to any other channel on my TV. It's been a very long time since I've even watched A&E--and the last time that I did, it was to catch Hornblower re-runs!

If you are interested in writing to A&E and letting them know that you want more Hornblower, you can find the applicable contact information by clicking here.

Letting the network know that there is a market for intelligent quality programming is a good thing.

Greetings!

May I chime in my $0.02 worth? A&E has gone from "Arts and Entertainment" to "Awful & Empty." Hmmmpf!

Dear Batwind,

Oh, I feel the same way. As a matter of fact, I was criusing this site to find a way to contact A & E about their current programming. I am in the process of transferring some of my vhs tapes to dvd and I am appalled at how the quality has dropped from shows like Pride and Prejudice, the Hornblower series, the many music, art and drama shows that were on ten years ago.

A & E has apparently dropped the "art" aspect of their
schedule and gone for "entertainment". And entertainment of the least expensibve kind....reality shows, true crime, sensational "scientists say, but others believe..."programs.

Of course, I change the channel and don't watch prime time. But it is sad that one of the quality channels is now just another lowest common denominator channel catering to violence and questionable taste.

Hi Batwind!

I'm in the UK, so we're not aware of the Decline and Fall of the channel as a whole, only their woeful reluctance to cough up the budget for more tall ships and adventurous tales...

Our TV is declining here too, though. We have loads of pointless programmes now about people living in other people's houses, or with other people's wives, or buying a villa in Spain, or cooking for the man down the road... For a girl brought up on the Lone Ranger and Robin Hood, this is all very disappointing...

I suppose the rubbish is cheap. It's as simple as that, but it doesn't stop us chafing over it, does it?

:|

I think you'll find many who agree with you here, Batwind. They don't always post, but I'm sure they read and agree.

Great board handle, btw! ;)

Decline of AandE

Dec 18, 2005 2:33 AM
I do not know if this is in the right forum but I for one am sad to see the decline of AandE into a twisted reality tv show channel. I can appreciate the economics of television and the fact that it infinitely cheaper to film and produce reality tv shows such as "Dog the Bounty Hunter" than it is original quality programming such as "Horatio Hornblower". Perhaps it is my eagerness in wanting to see more episodes of this fine series (HH not Dog the bounty hunter) but whenever AandE trots out more "original" reality programming, I feel the collective intelligence of western society lowering by several IQ points. Is it just me or does an episode of "growing up gotti" sorely miss the "Arts" requirement in AandE, because it certainly lacks the entertainment value.

Bring back Horatio Hornblower and start producing more AandE programming AandE!
