I personally think it's a good idea to get a degree in Criminal Justice, no matter what you do in Law Enforcement. You wouldn't believe what you will learn.... just my opinion.... :)

I just want to say that I think that you are right on point when you said that only a few where born to be a police officer and yeah most people are the ones calling them....I do believe that for thoes who want to go in the profession of criminal justice that they should do it because thats what they've always wanted to, I think if you always had it in your heart to do this profession you should and give it your all.... I also agree that people shouldn't just all of a sudden want to be a police office, or a homicide investigator just because of a television show, they end up going to school and have no idea what they are getting themselves into once they have gotten a job doing the real thing. Its not like TV kids....its much more than a picture....

"I wanna be a detective"

I ended up in this forum because I was trying to find out why all the re-runs and then I noticed all the "how do I become a Detective" questions. I even saw one that said I want to be a detective but I dont want to be a cop. Hello.......detectives are cops.

I am a 10 year vet at a S.O. in N.C. and made detective about 1.5 years ago so I can tell you how to become a detective. First, give up just about everything as you have known it. Current non-LEO friends, the 9-5 work day and your relatively stress free existance are just a few examples. Agree to spend years on patrol "making your bones" by getting cussed at, spit on, shot at, and otherwise despised my nearly everyone you have contact with. Spend many hours away from home and your loved ones and understand that some night you may come home and find no one waiting for you. If after the first few years of this, you still like your job then maybe you have a future moving up.

Just because all the detectives make it look so "cool" doesnt mean it is for everyone. I am not trying to discourage anyone, after all I had a dream of being an officer as a kid, but it comes from something inside of the good ones, not a TV show.

Keep in mind, a few were born to be the police, most were born to call the police.

P.S. A and E staff, more American Justice, City Confidential, Cold Case Files and The First 48, less Dawg, Airline and Family Plots.
