Filmstudent!!!! Fetch: I did some research to asnwer your question whether the "The Candy Lady" case from the show is the same one from 2002, and it isn't. "The Candy Lady" from the show was named Gloria Morris. See the excerpt below, especially victim #40, Gloria Morris, who was murdered in April 2006 (as the producer claimed in another posting). Hope that helps. Thank you, thank you, thank you! So there really were 2 Candy Ladies, both shot to death in the same county in Tennesee! I am now wondering if maybe that is a common nickname in Shelby County! I must say one more time! Thank you! I can enjoy the show again!!

As for the taping of shows .. its takes quite a while to get permission from DA's ..along with working thru all the red tape and the such to release the footage of these shows I am still amazed at and with A&E's determination to bring this footage to us ... I heard of a case that just went to court this week from a bit more then three years ago ..(it was the pilot episode of the 1st48 the episode that lead to the entire series .. think about that ...) Regardless of when the show is taped, or when it is aired, how much red tape thay have to go through to get this show on the air, or even when it goes to court... The case shown on TF48 and the case listed on the Shelby county DA website (for which there was an arrest made the following month) do not jibe. Since it has been several weeks since I saw this episode, and almost as long since I viewed the website of the Shelby County DA, I can not give all of the contradicting details. I do remember from the show, The Candy Lady was apparently shot through the front door of her apartment. The theory was, The shooter had a beef with the Candy Lady's son. From the SC DA website, the Candy Lady was killed inside her home, by a man who was attemping to purchase cigars from and rob her. My entire point, If the case on the show is the same case listed on the SC DA website. If the case is still open and cold! Then why on earth would they give information contradicting the actual evidence? Someone who had actual information to close this cold case might not recognize it as the same case at all! Again, I plead! Someone provide some information indicating the above is not the case. One other thing, I don't know where carin might glean her information regarding how difficult it is to get these cold cases to the television, but I do know that Detectives and DA's work with media quite often. News programs, Newspapers, Television shows like America's most wanted. If the case is cold, why hold back from any possible method of gaining some information regarding the said case? So happy upcoming Thanksgiving!

Hey Crime scene fans Another great Miami Homicide case coming up. My partner, Det. de los Santos and I picked up a new case coming up this thursday night at 9pm. "Broken Alibis" Originally it was going to be called "Deadly Footwear". Dont know what happpened there. I guess they can change the title any time they want. This case is about a homeless man who was in his sleep when murdered. incredibly cruel. You wont believe the tracking of the killers. excellent forensic work from our own CSI Techs and of course our own hard Detective work. This case took us on a good spin. Anyway, I hope you like it. Let me know what you think. I'll fill you in on some behind the scenes intel on the case. Just a little.. There are also a couple more of Team Five cases already filmed. I think they are in the final editing stages. We've had a very busy year. We have surpassed last years numbers of 56 murders and are now as of Nov.13 at 62. This is within City of Miami limits. I think our county, Miami-Dade County is nearing 200 murders. Talk to you all soon Det.Freddy Ponce Miami Homicide Team Five -- Edited by sanjac56 at 11/13/2006 12:44 AM

hey there .. been enjoying reading the posts on this thread ... as it is great to see others see that these women are doing an awesome job ...and really are top shelf in law enforcement .. As for the taping of shows .. its takes quite a while to get permission from DA's ..along with working thru all the red tape and the such to release the footage of these shows I am still amazed at and with A&E's determination to bring this footage to us ... I heard of a case that just went to court this week from a bit more then three years ago ..(it was the pilot episode of the 1st48 the episode that lead to the entire series .. think about that ...) I believe two to three years is the norm for Homicide cases to be tried .. and they (Production crews and A&E.. are doing an awesome job in turning out and producing the footage of the first 48 with in months as little as six to eight nine .. months ..getting these case to us) ... remember they are still suspects ( presumed innocent) till tried by jury .. I am amazed we are able to see these cases in the time span factor . Please note .. I am not a know it all .. simply I am just still quite impressed with all the hard work that goes into each of the episodes and the creation and production the 1st 48 and all those involved its production .. god Bless take care .... -- Edited by carin at 11/10/2006 6:30 PM

sorry if I don't take your "anonymous internet" word for it. I am only able to find mention of 1 shelby county candy lady, and that is copied verbatim above. I find it increasingly hard to believe there was more than 1 candy lady in shelby county. Wait, not only more than 1 candy lady, but more than 1 candy lady who was shot to death in shelby county!! And wouldn't this second candy lady rate some mention in print somewhere? especially if it is a cold case that never produced an arrest. Please if there is some information supporting your statement out there, point me to it! I truly wish to be de-bunked! I like the show, and will be very disappointed if it turns out to be a sham.

"How far in advance are the shows taped? The article from fetch is dated 2002. " Exactly my point, that article was taken from the Shelby County DA website. I find it hard to believe there have been two seperate "Candy Lady" murders in Shelby County. The really irritating part, The accounts of the two murders do not remotely match up. (TF48 Version) Candy lady was shot through the door of her apartment, possibly by someone upset with her son. (Shelby County DA Version) Candy Lady was shot inside her home by a man who was apparently purchasing cigars from her, Robbery gone bad. Dennis Ray Hodges was indicted for first degree murder for the May 21, 2002 shooting. So this guy was arrested within 7 months of the shooting! Why on earth would they show this episode almost 4 years later??? On the other hand, I can not find any information regarding sentencing for Mr. Hodges. So maybe he was acquitted of the charge, and the case is still open?? Even if that is the case, how would they expect to get any help solving this case if they do not stick to the facts of the original case?? I love the show, but if they are performing their own theatrical versions of open cases to garner tv ratings rather than try to solve open murders... Then please cancel this show as they are probably doing more harm than good. "they know what they are doing.. like oyu said you are only learning now and that is nothing to the squad at mephis... mrs caroline needs to stop with the hair does but as far as everything else she can't book anyone without 1st a murder weapon, or evidence that he was in fact the person to kill the candy lady.. testing for fingerprints would of been in violate of the law and the guys rights. keep on learning sweetheart" Quick question, How would fingerprinting be violating the law? Not that fingerprinting would have done any good in the first place, I am just curious as to how this would be against a suspects rights.

First of all, Sgt. Mason is a dime. I like the fact that she takes the time to be the honest sister on cable television. Keep up the good work, Sexy Sgt. Mason! I recently visited Memphis and was hoping for the opportunity to just bump into her, because my cousin who has been employed at the Shelby County Jail for over twenty years, would not introduce her to me. That's okay, my crush will go on!

Hello, I'm Yolanda and I am new to this board but not new to the first 48. I love this show and as they sometimes do a few seasons and stop.. I hope and pray this is not so with the first 48 because now tv is all about stupid relatily shows and i reallty hate to spend my time looking at ppl doing what i can be out doing myself without watching them do it on tv. but I hope the first 48 goes on strong fro season after season. I love the mephis and miami crew the best. Caroline massey is a mess I love how she handles the person of interest... I will be sure to get the 1st 48 hours on dvd

I wished that Sgt. Mason, would have had more time with the interview of the suspect. The other detective was weak. Sgt. Mason usually has a swagger to her that makes the hardened criminal spill his guts. I'm sure they will solve the crime soon!

Memphis, TN – The Shelby County Grand Jury today indicted 38-year-old Dennis Ray Hodges for first degree murder for the May 21, 2002 shooting death of 44-year-old Debra Nguyen. According to the affidavit of complaint, Hodges entered the home of Nguyen, known to neighbors as “The Candy Lady,” to purchase cigars. Once inside the home, located at 1205 Springdale Road, Hodges pulled a pistol and fired several times at Nguyen after she refused to give him money, according to the affidavit. Memphis Police arrested Hodges on June 16, 2002. He remains in custody at the Shelby County Jail. Is this the same candy lady? The story doesn't seem to match up very well. One is shot through the door of an apartment, the other is shot inside her home. how many freaking candy ladies are there in Shelby County Tennessee? So, I haven't looked up results from any of the other unresolved cases I have seen on the show. I wonder now though, if the show is loosely based on actual cases from several years ago? Are any of the people being questioned, or even the officers, individuals actually involved with the original case? or are they all just actors re-enacting a story somewhat based on a case from several years ago????? someone please tell me this is not fake reality show garbage! I really like this show, and I will be ever so disappointed if it turns out it is all TV fluff to boost ratings.
