yeah, that is right- Charles II was the last person to attempt to be an absolute ruler. The next king was I believe William of Orange, and his Queen Mary, who were in a bloodless coup, invited to serve by Parliment, beginning the era of Constitutional Monarchy.

In the UK we were concerned it might be renamed 'Chuck & Bucks big adventure' so the actual substitute was a relief... SMG

Agreed, big time, on both scores. A bit more on your #1. Being a king was not an either/or proposition. As the Br. constitution evolved towards more & more limits on the prerogative, many sovereigns tried to swim against the tide by using their political skills. Chas II had 'em, Jas II didn't!

The 18th cent monarchs pretty much gave in to Parliament until Geo III. Only he & Vickie (in the 19th c) influenced events to any great degree. So one could say that Chas I was "the last king" to wield anything like the political power of the Tudors.

On the first point, I'll buy that. Thank you.

As to the second, there's no reason they couldn't have provided the full version on the DVD. Like they did with MI-5.

1) I believe he was the last king to rule as an absolute monarch, once he gave Parliament the boot.
2) I suspect they edited to make room for commercials, which (last time I looked!) the BBC doesn't have. Afterwards I wished that I had simply recorded it and watched later, FFing through commericals. It was hard to maintain the mood and ambience of another century when interrupted every twelve minutes by perky, loud commercials.

2 Problems

1) Why did A&E rename "Charles II: The Power and the Passion" to "The Last King"?
He wasn't the last king. He wasn't the last Stuart king. He wasn't even the last party king.

2) Why did A&E cut out 1 hour? The run time we got was 188 minutes. The run time the BBC got was 240 minutes.
