I read Amber back in '87 or '88 and then remember reading at that time that Raquel Welch had planned on doing a 3 hour TV movie or mini about which I was really excited. Needless to say nothing ever came of it. I'm surprised PBS or Masterpiece Theatre hasn't done a presentation as this is great fodder for a wonderful production!

You are so right--it is a book one simply can't put down. I believe the author's husband was doing research for a book he was going to write on Anne Boleyn (maybe someone can help me out here) and "Forever Amber" was born of his wife's attempts not to be bored while he was away. I don't think a movie has been made yet that would really do justice to this book.

I was going thru things in the attic and I came across the book Forever Amber. It must have been my Mothers. I am reading it now and I find it quite interesting. I can't seem to put it down. I want to just keep reading it. It is really a great book.

I purchased "With All My Heart" by Margaret Campbell Barnes on your suggestion. Thank you! And I love the book.

I loved With All My Heart, and Forever Amber as well! I read F.A. twice, once many years ago, and again recently when the author (Kathleen Winsor) died and interest in the book was revived. Most decent writers of historical fiction (NOT the bodice-ripper variety) do extensive historical research before beginning the book, and it's astonishing how much you can learn about an era from reading their novels. There are also some good biographies available on Charles II.

I read Amber about 15 years ago and ofcourse have seen the 40's movie with Linda Darnell. I enjoyed the book and since seeing "King" was thinking of rereading it. Didn't Castelmaine have about 5 or 6 kids with Charles? Another old book you may enjoy is With All My Heart by Margaret Campbell Barnes about Catherine of Braganza. MG

This was how I was introduced to the reign of Charles II. FOREVER AMBER is, of course, historical fiction, but it is my favorite book. I enjoyed it, and I am going to watch the 3 hour version to see what they left out. Has anyone read FOREVER AMBER?
