Portguese and Spanish are both romance languages. Their root language is Latin. Same for French, Italian, and Romanian. Catherine was telling Charles that if he were patient with her she would learn how to please him. And as he was exiting their wedding night she sadly told him she was probably not quite pretty enough for him. It is highly unlikely Catherine and Charles did not have at least one language in common. The each probably had a working knowledge of French. Royalty of the time were grilled in upwards of four to five languages.

Thanks for the translation. A & E could have subtitled this scene. As it stands, it meant nothing to most viewers.

I thought she was excellent! I speak Spanish, and was able to understand some of the Portuguese (they do have SOME similarities!). I thought it was especially moving in the wedding-night scene, when I think she was trying to tell him how she admired him, and he misinterpreted it, thinking she was sending him away. It seems crazy that neither one of them had made an attempt to learn at least some of the other's language before the wedding!

Wonderfull cast, of course i'm a big fan of Rufus Sewell (King Charles), the portuguese spoken by the queen is very good and the actress looks very portuguese, but there's one little mistake; at one time she says "stupido" which means stupid in spanish but in portuguese means something different, means "rude", and she says it w/ a spanish accent, people when are u gonna learn that portuguese (specially from portugal) and spanish are two very different languages?! For you brazilians (or not) fans of Rufus Sewell I have some pics on my website www.fotolog.net/analuizaperrone
