I totally agree that James Purefoy is absolutely gorgeous!
This program was the first time I'd ever seen him act, and I was very impressed. The Scottish accent was totally believeable.
I've read online that A&E had to delete one hours worth of scenes to get it into a two hour time slot. The DVD has the third hour intact.
I too was confused the first time I watched this (I taped it and have watched it twice now). Did you notice that a commercial break was placed right in the middle of Donald Farfrae's singing in the hotel?
Also, the final scenes with Lucetta - the editing of those was really botched in my opinion.
I look forward to getting the DVD and I have my fingers crossed that it will answer the questions I have.
I may have to get the book too.
I rented A Knight's Tale and Resident Evil for the express purpose of seeing more of James Purefoy. What a delight! :^)

I also think that he is a wonderful actor. ...and he is much more than delightful to look at ...... I think he is absolutely gorgeous..the only part about the movie that bothered me and I have not read the book to know if this was settled, but how is it that he was courting Elizabeth and then wham all of a sudden he decides to marry Lucetta....and Lucetta had to know something was going on between Elizabeth and Donald, why else would a single man call on Elizabeth after she moved out of her fathers house???? I mean come on, and Elizabeth was so good not to say anything, I know I sure could not have stood there and not say or do anything..I would at least let Lucetta know that we had a thing ......

While I have never read The Mayor of Casterbridge, I think I shall go back and get the book to pick up on all the details missing. However, I think James Purefoy was a great asset to the movie. In "A Knight's Tale," his part was small but he played it well. Seeing him in this movie convinces me he is a very good actor and I hope we see more of him on this side of the pond. He's also quite nice to look at! :)
