Why was being "Lutheran" important to the film?

I think it was just a handy inside joke kind of thing to point up how we see differences between people; i.e. what is "important." (it didn't matter whether Ted was a man or a woman, but it mattered whether he was the "right" kind of person.) "Methodist" would have worked as well as "Lutheran" (maybe better when you factor in that there are really two kinds of Lutherans), while "Presbyterian" is just too many syllables to be funny. Clearly they just wanted a mainline denomination, but I doubt that any church polity played into it.

And yeah, kinda weak that the liberal party governor wouldn't have his daughter married off in a church, when he was so keen to keep up appearances for the sake of the middle/right. The things we sacrifice for plot lines...

Why was being "Lutheran" important to the film?

Several times in the film is was stressed that Sheldon and Ben were Lutheran. It is the first question their dad asks Shel's boyfriend. Why?

There was no discussion of a pre-marriage religous course, which would be a requiremnt of the Lutheran Church. There were no meetings with the pastor. The wedding didn't even appear to be that religious an event. The officiant was heard by almost unseen. She didn't appear to be wearing Lutheran vestments (alb and stole) rather she appeared to be dressed like a Presbyterian (Geneva gown and stole).

I wonder if it was because the writers wanted to make sure that we knew that Ben and Shel were (1) NOT Jewish (Sheldon and Benjamine are popular Jewish names) OR (2) NOT Roman Catholic since that church has made such prominant anti-gay marriage statements thought the House of Bishops and the Vatican OR (3) that they were definately NOT Episcopalian/Anglican so that they were not drawn into the post General Convention schism of that tradition.

If so, why not Prebyterian USA since that denomination has made some vary favorable positive staments about same-gender marriage. The Lutheran chuch has not been as supportine or vocal as the liberal Presbies USA.
